My garden is coming up nicely. I was inspired today to rewatch the Great Depression Cooking episode in which Clara makes a dandelion salad. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51VhG8MKxJY . She was so cheerful and pleasant to listen to. The salad is a ton of work, but I’ll put down the Roundup for now, just in case.
Now the Poorman’s meal looks great! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OPQqH3YlHA
My real gardening attempt, with peppers again and summer squash as a first try, was started a few days ago, and my seed starters by the window already have a few little sprouts just popping. I had two pepper plants last summer; I’d walk over about once a week expecting to find them dead, and not only find them alive, but fruitful!
I’m hoping my little fellows will be more interested in the garden this year. As I was preparing my tray of seeds, my oldest came over and wanted to help, so I have no rows to speak of. Then, he wanted a garden all his own, so he got a small pot of soil and put in some extra pepper seeds and a packet of hummingbird garden mix. I went to water it this morning (pretty sure it hasn’t gotten any since the first day) and found he’d become even more ambitious after our last movie night. I’m pretty sure this is how Orville Redenbacher began.
If he can sprout a popcorn kernel, then I'll put him in charge of the whole operation.
