I heard an interview with the author on the radio, and of course eating dandelions came up. That's like, the craziest part. Or is it?
I’ve joked about it before, but more as an excuse not to weed my yard. I can't completely rid us of them; Son Two loves to blow on them, then pull them apart, since he’s not figured out how to really blow.
And as he was playing in the patch by our wall the other day, I decided I’d go for it. I gathered a handful of greens while he played.
(Stalk included to prove this isn't arugula.)
Then I balked. I looked on the internet to see what I could find. Live Strong had a neat article, and it even detailed how the plant had come from Europe with the colonists. They hauled those things all the way over, and we're supposed to spray them??
It needed something - like some sweet honey mustard dressing, chips, and a barbecue sandwich. On top of some spinach and chopped carrots, this was a unique-tasting salad. With all the benefits the dandelions provide, it was worth the effort, and I'll probably grab a handful again sometime when I'm channeling my urban homesteader.
